Brighton 1 - 5 Liverpool FT: The Brighton striker pulled a goal back from the penalty spot when Jordan Henderson was adjudged to have pushed Shane Duffy a few minutes later, but Liverpool added some gloss to the result with two late goals. Philippe Coutinho scored their fourth when he sent a clever free-kick under the Brighton wall and into the bottom corner, and two minutes later his curling shot was deflected into his own net by Lewis Dunk.
Developers Neptune say they aim to start work this year on an apartment block which formed part of the original scheme and are also seeking to have the new development classed by the council as a town centre to ease planning restrictions. Key among its attractions is the revamped Floral Pavilion theatre and conference centre which has been widely celebrated as its fortunes revived.
Now developer Neptune hopes to build on this success with the site being redesignated as a town centre and expanded to include a wider area of the town. The move comes as yet more businesses have opened up in the area, which until the redevelopment had suffered from a lack of investment and a decline from its former glory days as a leading resort town.
Daniel Hynd, investment director at Neptune Investments, said: It makes decisions easier, with less hoops to jump through.
He pointed to work on a massive development by Wirral Partnership Homes, farther along Victoria Road on the site of the former Hotel Victoria, as a sign the property market is improving. The plans for the apartments adjacent to the new Floral Pavilion Theatre, had proved controversial when first mooted and hundreds of people signed a petition opposing them, although in the council approved proposals by Neptune to build a block of 24 larger apartments, reduced from the original plan for 37 with retail units on the ground floor.
But Cllr Hackett said: The old theatre closed its doors in April, but Mr Holliday said: There is definitely something in the air in this born-again seaside town — and it smells like that winning combination of confidence and pride. For many dispiriting decades, when people talked about New Brighton they often talked about it in the past tense, as its good times and halcyon days were all behind it.
It was as if it the modern-day New Brighton had been kept on a life support machine courtesy of memories of a magical era when, it seemed, thousands upon thousands of fun-seekers from Liverpool would make regular pilgrimages to enjoy its many and varied delights.
The present was a depressing non-event, while the future seemed just as bleak. But that was then. It all began with the delightful new Floral Pavilion theatre and conference centre, which has rightly received bucketfuls of bouquets, while the Marine Point scheme which followed included the 1,seat Light cinema, a Grosvenor casino, a range of restaurants and bars, a Morrisons supermarket, Home Bargains store, a Travelodge and Bubbles World of Play.
The sun was shining on New Brighton during my visit, in more ways than one. My tour guide was Wirral council cabinet member for regeneration Pat Hackett, who, having lived in the town for most of his life, is basking in these new beginnings — after so many crushing false starts.
There was nothing here at all and the town had been left to go to rack and ruin.
The open-air baths, Tower and pier were all let go and there was no strategy, vision or investment. Compromise and co-operation helped get the town to where it is today. And people like Cllr Hackett are hungry for further improvements to the town. Like us on Facebook. The only request for a new rank was for locations in New Brighton.
